Discovered by a New Zealand orchardist named J.H. Kidd in 1934, Gala apples are a cross between Kidd’s Orange Red (English favorite), and Golden Delicious. By the 1970s they made their way into the U.S. market. Gala apple has a mildly sweet flavor.
